Pez de hasta 40 cm. de longitud con el cuerpo aplastado lateralmente y con la cabeza alta. Posee dos aletas dorsales con 9 espinas y de 23 a 24 radios blandos en total. Aleta anal entre 1 y 3 espinas y de 18 a 20 radios blandos. Color plateado.
